#FamilyTree365 – Day 19 September 19, 2016

Rabbi Manass Neumark was the first Rabbi of the Jewish Community of Duisburg.  While Duisburg is one of my ancestral towns, I am not actually directly connected to him.  He is the great grandfather of two of my second cousins that live in Israel.  Duisburg, as far as I know, isn’t even how my mother’s cousin and her husband met.  But I digress….

Manass was born in 1875 in Poznan to Tsvi Neumark and Albertine Ephraim.  It appears he was a Rabbi in Berlin before moving to Duisburg around 1905 (if what I am reading is translating correctly).  I don’t have a marriage date for him but he was married to his cousin Martha Neumark.  Together they had four children Hermann, Ruth, Ernst, and Eva.  Ernst is the grandfather of my second cousins.  Ernst and his other son Hermann co-wrote the book Geschichte der Duisburger Juden (History of the Jews of Duisburg) along with Harry Epstein.  Harry was the son of Siegmund Epstein, whom I wrote about on September 9th.

Martha died in 1924.  Manass was sent to and murdered in Theresienstadt on October 21, 1942.  His sister Hulda was also sent to and murdered in Theresienstadt on September 10, 1943.
