#FamilyTree365 – Day 17 September 17, 2016

Part 4

So the past three posts have been leading up to the following Possible SpaceBallsRelationship.

As I mentioned yesterday Jente Golde is supposedly connected to the Shapira family that currently owns Giant Eagle, one of the major grocery stores in Western Pennsylvania.

The Schapira family (as it was originally spelled) was from the town Pomorzany (or Kalisz I am still working that out.)  Asher (Jacob) and his family came to the US over a period of years in the late 1890’s to the early 1910’s.  He and his wife Sarah (Scheiner) had nine children – Fannie, Benjamin, Rose, and Saul born before immigration and Morris, Pearl Tillie, Irving, and Leah in Pittsburgh.

After World War I three local families – the Goldsteins, Porters, and Chaits build a grocery chain called Giant.  In 1928 it merged with Kroger and the families agreed to stay out of the grocery business for at least three years.   Eventually they started Eagle Grocery Company which eventually merged with Giant to become Giant Eagle.

Saul, the son of Jacob (as Asher was known in the states), married Frieda Goldstein who was the daughter of Joseph Goldstein, one of the founders mentioned above.
